The 5103 series use AMD processors while the Aspire 5633 uses Intel processors. I would recommend the 5633 when mobility is important and the 5103 when it is not as important.

Unfortunately the notebook is not formally supported running any other operating system other than Windows. However the main components should all be supported under most major GNU/Linux distributions while you may need to use the NDIS wrapper for the wireless card.

XPMCE is almost identical to XP Home and all hardware and software will run fine. The laptop will run Vista and the Aero interface if you choose to upgrade later. It is not however possible to change the VRAM on the graphics card.

There are a number of differences between the notebooks however the most significant is the screen size. The 9301WSMi has a slightly faster processor but the greater system memory in the 5103 will compensate for the difference when handling larger files. If you want a big screen go for the 9301 if you want a more portable model then the 5103 is the better choice.

The X1100 is integrated into the chipset and uses shared system memory, and so would not be suitable for most modern games. The X1300 is a separate graphics chip which uses dedicated video memory and giving better 3D performance.
