Laptops Direct Design Award May 08

If you want a laptop that you can easily take on your travels, or just a 2nd laptop for when the kids are hogging the family PC, the ACER ASPIRE ONE A110L is worthy of serious consideration.

At less than 1Kg this lightweight model is sure to make you wonder how you ever managed to lug a standard laptop around.

The powerful Intel Atom processor gives you fantastic performance in an incredibly small package. Also, the Solid State Hard Drive is purpose built to handle the rigors of the mobile user, much more robust and with quicker access times it won’t let you down.

With full WiFi capabilities you’ve got the internet as well as all your files at your fingertips wherever you are.

Plus, with the added bonus of a CrystalEye webcam you can easily keep in touch with loved ones absolutely free.

If it’s an ultra-portable laptop you need without compromising on performance, you can’t go wrong with the Aspire one 110L.

Question from Gemma Baker-Bond: Asked on 09/05/2009 Hi I want to order this netbook for my son, he plays runescape on my exsisting laptop can he play this on the acer aspire one.

Many thanks

Answer from SteveF: Answered on 11/05/2009
It may struggle, although Runescape isn't a very demanding game, the graphical capabilities of this model isn't best suited to full games, more the little internet puzzle games you can download.

Question from JT: Asked on 25/11/2008 I am looking for laptop for my son to use for schoolwork and fun. Do you recomend this one or should i be looking for a different type? I have no idea!

Answer from SteveF: Answered on 27/11/2008
Hi JT, these Netbooks are perfect for surfing the web, downloading music and using basic office applications such as word processing and were originally designed with children in mind, although the adults seem to be having most of the fun with them at the moment.
The one drawback for some is the lack of DVD drive so you can't play or burn DVD's or CDs but this keeps the weight down and you can buy an external optical drive if needed.

As long as it is compatible with Linux, you would need to check with the manufacturer or the service provider.

Question from james: Asked on 18/10/2008 what broadband suppliers are compatable with linux

Answer from peterh: Answered on 27/10/2008
All ISPs networks are compatible with computers running Linux. The compatibility issues arise where specialist hardware is required for the connection - eg. a lot of mobile broadband modems are not compatible with Linux. Using a linux-based laptop to go online via a wireless router or via a wired connection is no problem at all.

Question from lor: Asked on 01/10/2008 does this model have a dvd re-writer drive?

Answer from peterh: Answered on 03/10/2008
No - This is a 'netbook' designed for ultra-portability. It does not feature a DVD/CD drive as these would increase the size of the unit. Instead, you can use an external DVD/CD drive for the times when you need to install software or watch a movie.

Question from kobuta: Asked on 01/10/2008 Is it possible to install Windows XP? (I have a XP SP2 CD). Does the Aspire One come with a driver disk to be used when installing Windows?

Answer from SteveF: Answered on 02/10/2008
The Acer One netbook comes with both OS recovery discs so you can take your pick.

Question from matt: Asked on 18/09/2008 I'd like to know if there is any reason why I couldn't install a full Linux OS on this laptop, or even Windows XP OS - or will it only work with Linux Lite? Also assuming there is disk space, is there a limit to what software packages that could be installed on it?

Answer from Easycom: Answered on 19/09/2008
You have to remember that these machines are not full laptops and so have lite versions of the operating systems. They are meant for internet/e-mail and a few other applications. If you put too much on they will clog up and run slowly.

Question from Peter: Asked on 15/09/2008 Would I be able to use Orange broad band on linux. They don't seem to list it. Or which ISP's ?

Answer from Easycom: Answered on 16/09/2008
This depends entirely on your modem - If you have a USB modem that plugs directly in to your computer, then no (unless linux drivers for the USB modem are supplied) - However, if your modem uses ethernet, or is wireless, then connecting via the Linux version of the Aspire One is no problem at all.

Question from Phil Lutterloch: Asked on 14/09/2008 Can I download/use Skpye with this notebook and will the built in web work ok?

Question from george2u: Asked on 25/08/2008 I would like to know how many USB ports are there on the Acer Aspire one A110L and are they USB 2 or USB 1.

Question from Jen: Asked on 25/08/2008 Are there any USB HSDPA modem sticks that are compatible with the Linpus Linux Lite OS (since there's no built-in 3G modem)? Many thanks.

Answer from Easycom: Answered on 26/08/2008
Linpus does support most of the actual HSDPA devices, but the vendor of most 3G broadband packages do not support Linux with the software they provide. I would recommend an aspire one with XP installed, for guaranteed compatibility.

Question from Dan (yet again): Asked on 20/08/2008 most reviews also show the slot for 3G sim card behind the battery, referring to Nat's question, could you please confirm that? Thanks a bunch

Answer from Easycom: Answered on 21/08/2008
There is going to be a version with a 3g card slot but these are not expected to ship until after christmas.

Question from pip: Asked on 12/08/2008 The RAM can be upgraded to 1 GB only, will this be by the addition of a 512Mb SD card?

Answer from Easycom: Answered on 13/08/2008
The Aspire Ones have 512MB of RAM soldered directly onto the mainboard that can not be removed. There is also a slot for an extra memory slot. On the 512MB models, this slot is empty, but on the 1GB models this slot contains a 512MB dimm. It is possible to manually add a 512mb or 1GB dimm in this slot to increase a 512mb model to 1GB or 1.5GB memory, but unfortunately you have to open the case to do this (voids warranty) as Acer did not integrate an easy-access panel into the Aspire One.

Question from Philip Everard: Asked on 05/08/2008 If I buy software for applications such as PICO Data Logger or an encyclopedia or a film on a dvd etc. on a CD or DVD how do get it into this computer and will my memory stick work on this machine. Also if I have Excel spreadsheets can I open them and work on them and save them on this computer. I otherwords what are the limitations and advantages .

Answer from Easycom: Answered on 11/08/2008
You can use an external (USB) CD/DVD drive with the Aspire One. They are also compatible with USB memory sticks. If you install Microsoft Office on this laptop then you will also be able to open your spreadsheets.

Question from Scott: Asked on 04/08/2008 Are there any spare mini-PCI slots inside the case?

Answer from Easycom: Answered on 11/08/2008
Unfortunately not, this laptop is tiny and does not have any room for anything besides an extra stick of RAM.

Question from Pablo: Asked on 04/08/2008 Is it possible to change the hard drive? Thank you

No, I dont think it's possible to change the SSD ones.

Question from SteveD: Asked on 04/08/2008 Can you print work done on OpenOffice and the like off the Linux SSD models via a USB port? If so, are there specific printer models that work or is there a generic driver that works with most printers?

Answer from Easycom: Answered on 04/08/2008
This is possible. The required drivers should be easily avaliable if you type the model of your printer alongwith 'usb drivers' into google.

Question from SMT: Asked on 18/07/2008 Your product summary describes all the Acer Aspire One's Hard Drive Capacity. I am interested in the Linux - SSD (i.e. NOT Hard Drive) flavour - could you please tell me what is the highest specification this is available in? e.g. can the RAM and/or the battery be upgraded? What to? How much would the top spec cost? How soon could we have it? Thank you, SMT

Answer from Easycom: Answered on 21/07/2008
The standard specification for the Linux SSD model is 8GB with 512mb RAM. The RAM can be upgraded after-sales to a 1GB module, but the SSD can not be upgraded. A 6-cell battery can also be purchased to increase battery life. These are all after-market upgrades. I can't speculate on availability at this time, they are due in stock at the end of this month, and we have a pre-order system in place. The best thing to do would be to place a pre-order as soon as possible on the 8GB SSD Linux version and purchase the aftermarket upgrades when they become available.
