RAM, or Random Access Memory, is like your computer's short-term memory. When you're running an application, like Excel, your computer stores information "in memory" using RAM to help make it run faster - in most cases, if you're computer is running slowly it's because of either too little RAM or too slow a processor. For most uses, 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient however for more specialised use cases (such as grpahic design or gaming) you can require much higher RAM, if there are specific applications you need to use your laptop for they'll ususally have guidance on minmimum specification requirements. If you're buying a Chromebook the RAM requirements may be less as more of the processing takes place "in the cloud".
A processor, or CPU (Central Processing Unit), is the brain of your computer. The faster your processor, the quicker your computer can whip up everything you need, from web browsing to gaming.
