2.5 SSDs: A simple way to refresh an older laptop or desktop

A 2.5-inch SSD is a common choice for computers that use a standard SATA drive bay. Most current consumer models are around 7mm thick, so they fit many laptops as well as desktop mounting bays. A 2.5 SATA SSD connects through the SATA interface rather than an M.2 slot. Check your computer manual first, as some slim laptops don’t include a bay or the cable needed to connect one.

What speed can you expect from SATA storage?

SATA III has a 6Gb/s interface, with real solid-state transfer speeds topping out at around 550MB/s after overhead. That’s below the peak speed of modern NVMe storage, but it can still make a big difference when replacing a mechanical drive. Samsung’s 870 EVO, for example, is rated at up to 560MB/s read and 530MB/s write. For web browsing, office work and everyday apps, SATA storage can offer a practical mix of speed, capacity and value.

Check the bay, cables and capacity before ordering

If you’ve searched for a 2.5 SSD hard drive, you’re usually looking for solid-state storage that fits the same type of bay as a traditional laptop drive. Desktop installations may need a mounting bracket if the case only has larger 3.5-inch bays. You’ll also need SATA data and power connections in a desktop PC.

For a laptop, check whether the required cable or caddy is already fitted. Capacity matters too, so allow some spare room for Windows updates, apps and future files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Often, yes. If your laptop uses a compatible 2.5-inch SATA bay, you can usually replace its mechanical storage with a solid-state drive. Check your exact laptop model first, including the drive thickness and connection. Older laptops are one of the most common reasons shoppers choose this format.
Check your laptop manual or the maker’s support page. Look for a 2.5-inch SATA bay and note the supported drive thickness. Many modern SATA models are 7mm thick. Some laptops also need a separate cable, bracket or caddy, so it’s worth checking what’s already inside before ordering.
Many SATA III drives are backwards compatible with SATA II. They’ll still work, but the older interface limits their speed. Kingston states that its SATA drives support earlier SATA generations, with SATA II limited to around 280MB/s. Check the specification of your chosen model before buying.
It depends on your case. Some desktop cases include mounting points for smaller drives. Others only have 3.5-inch bays, so an adaptor or bracket may be needed for a neat fit. You’ll also need a SATA data cable and a SATA power connection from the power supply.
It can be. Game loading is generally much quicker from solid-state storage than from a mechanical drive. NVMe can offer much higher transfer speeds, but that doesn’t mean every older PC needs it. If your computer only supports SATA, a compatible solid-state upgrade can still make loading and everyday use feel much quicker.
Some newer laptops and desktops use M.2 NVMe storage instead, while others support both formats. Check the available slots and connections before choosing. You can browse our wider SSD storage range to compare SATA, M.2 and other suitable storage options.
