What can a flickering laptop screen mean

The timing and appearance of the flicker can help you choose the next check. A pattern is a clue, not a diagnosis, so test one change at a time and avoid assuming that a setting or component is at fault too soon.

It flickers in one app An incompatible or recently updated app may be involved, especially if system windows remain stable.
The whole display flickers A display driver, refresh-rate setting, operating-system issue or hardware path may need checking.
It changes when you move the lid A hinge, display cable or panel issue becomes more likely, so stop flexing the screen and arrange support.
Only an external monitor flickers Check the cable, port, input, resolution and refresh rate for the external display.
It started after an update A recent graphics driver or system change may be relevant. Check the platform's update and rollback options.
Lines or colours appear Save your work and record the symptom. Persistent lines, distortion or a damaged panel need manufacturer support.

Quick checks for a flickering laptop screen

Start with checks that do not change your files or remove software. Restart after relevant changes and note whether the flicker returns.

Restart the laptop

A restart can clear a temporary graphics or app problem. Save your work first and use the normal restart option where possible.

Check the charger and connections

Look for a loose charger, damaged cable, dock or external display connection. Disconnect unnecessary accessories and test the laptop on battery power if it is safe and practical.

Check brightness and refresh rate

Test a different brightness level. If you are using an external display, select a supported resolution and refresh rate from the display settings.

Try a screenshot

Take a screenshot while the problem is visible. If the flicker appears in the screenshot, software or graphics output may be involved. If it does not, the built-in panel or its connection may need checking.

Check another user or app

Test a different app, browser tab or user account if available. A problem limited to one app can point towards that app, an extension or its graphics settings.

Record what you see

Note whether the issue appears before sign-in, only after sign-in, during video playback, when gaming or when the lid moves. This helps support narrow down the next step.

How to fix a flickering screen in Windows

Microsoft says Windows screen flicker is commonly linked to a display-driver problem or an incompatible app. Use Task Manager to help separate those two routes, then work through the matching steps.

Task Manager flickers too

If Task Manager flickers with the rest of the screen, a display driver is more likely to be involved. Continue with the driver checks below.

Task Manager stays stable

If Task Manager does not flicker while other content does, an incompatible app may be involved. Update or remove the app that triggers the problem.

Nothing is visible clearly

If the screen is difficult to use, try Safe Mode or connect another display if available before continuing with driver checks.

  1. Reset the graphics driver

Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows may make a sound or the display may briefly go dark while the graphics driver resets. Test the screen again afterwards.

  2. Check whether Task Manager flickers

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and open Task Manager, or press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Compare its behaviour with the rest of the display.

  3. Update the display driver

Search for Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the display adapter and choose Update driver. Restart Windows and check the screen again.

  4. Roll back a recent driver change

If the flicker began after a driver update, open the display adapter's Properties, select the Driver tab and check whether Roll Back Driver is available. The option may not appear on every laptop.

  5. Test or remove an incompatible app

Update the app that triggers the flicker. If the problem continues, uninstall it through Windows settings, restart the laptop and check whether the display is stable.

Windows support route Read Microsoft's screen-flicker troubleshooting guidance before downloading a display driver from a third-party website.

How to fix a flickering screen on a MacBook

On a MacBook, first establish whether the flicker affects the built-in screen, an external display or a particular app. Display settings, refresh rate, external connections and recent software changes are useful places to start.

  1. Restart and disconnect accessories

Save your work, restart the MacBook and disconnect docks, hubs, external displays and other accessories. Test the built-in screen before reconnecting them one at a time.

  2. Check Displays settings

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Check the selected resolution and refresh rate. Apple notes that a refresh rate that is too low can make a display appear to flicker.

  3. Check Adaptive Sync on an external display

If an external monitor flickers, select a fixed refresh rate rather than a variable or Adaptive Sync setting, then test the monitor again. Also check the cable, adapter and display input.

  4. Install available macOS updates

Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and install updates that are available for your MacBook. Test the display after restarting.

  5. Arrange support for persistent built-in flicker

If the built-in display continues to flicker after software and connection checks, record the pattern and contact Apple or the relevant manufacturer before opening the MacBook.

How to fix a flickering screen on a Chromebook

ChromeOS screen problems can involve the display, connection, operating system or a connected monitor. Start with a restart and update, then use an external display or the manufacturer's support route to compare the symptoms.

  1. Restart the Chromebook

Save anything important, sign out if possible and restart the Chromebook. Test the screen before reconnecting accessories or opening the apps you were using.

  2. Check for ChromeOS updates

Open Settings > About ChromeOS and check for updates. Restart when prompted and see whether the flicker returns.

  3. Disconnect accessories and check the display

Remove docks, USB-C adapters and external displays. Check the brightness and test the built-in screen on its own, without pressing or moving the panel unnecessarily.

  4. Try an external monitor if available

Connect the Chromebook to a compatible monitor or TV using the correct cable or adapter. If the external display is stable while the built-in screen flickers, contact the Chromebook manufacturer about the laptop display.

  5. Use a hardware reset only as a later check

Google says a hardware reset can help with some Chromebook hardware problems, but it can affect local files in the Downloads folder. Back up important files and follow the instructions for your model first.

Chromebook support route Use Google's hardware and system troubleshooting guidance, then contact the Chromebook manufacturer if the flicker continues.

Use an external monitor to narrow down the problem

A second display can help you compare the laptop's graphics output with its built-in panel. This test does not identify a specific failed component, but it can show whether the symptom is limited to one screen or follows the output.

Built-in screen flickers only

If another display remains stable, check the laptop panel, hinge area and internal display connection through the manufacturer's support route.

Both displays flicker

Check the graphics driver, operating-system updates, app behaviour and display settings for the laptop rather than focusing only on the built-in panel.

External display flickers only

Check the cable, adapter, port, input source, resolution and refresh rate. Test another cable or display where possible.

When should you get further help

Arrange manufacturer or qualified repair support if the flicker remains after the platform checks, appears before sign-in, changes when the lid moves, follows physical damage or affects more than one operating system. Keep a note of the model, symptoms and steps you have tried.

The panel shows persistent lines

Save your work, avoid pressing the display and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service with a description of the symptom.

The flicker follows lid movement

Stop repeatedly opening and closing the lid to test it. A hinge or display connection needs a proper inspection.

The laptop has other faults

If the laptop also crashes, overheats, loses power or shows unusual smells, stop using it and arrange support before continuing with software checks.

Laptop screen flicker questions, answered

Why is my laptop screen flickering

Common possibilities include a display-driver problem, incompatible app, unsupported refresh rate, loose connection, external display issue or damaged screen hardware. The timing of the flicker can help you choose the next check.

Can a flickering laptop screen be fixed

Sometimes. Restarting, checking the display settings, updating or rolling back a driver and removing an incompatible app can help with software-related flicker. Persistent lines, lid-related flicker or physical damage need manufacturer or repair support.

Why does my laptop screen flicker when I move the lid

Lid-related flicker can point towards the panel, hinge or internal display connection. Stop flexing the screen to test it, save your work and arrange support for the laptop.

Will a new monitor fix a flickering laptop screen

An external monitor may provide a practical second display and can help compare the laptop's built-in screen with another output. It will not repair a laptop display, graphics or motherboard fault, so check the cause first.

Should I trade in a laptop with a flickering screen

You can use the trade-in route to check the available valuation process, but describe the flickering screen and any other faults accurately. Back up your files and remove personal accounts before sending a device anywhere.
