How to measure a laptop screen
You only need a tape measure or ruler. The standard screen measurement runs diagonally across the visible display, rather than across the laptop body or along the top edge.

Open the laptop and clean the display
Open the laptop so the screen is easy to see. Wipe away dust or marks that could make the edge of the visible display difficult to identify.

Place the ruler at an inside corner
Start at the corner of the visible display area. Use the lower-left and upper-right corners, or the opposite diagonal, depending on which is easiest to reach.

Measure across the display
Extend the ruler or tape diagonally to the opposite inside corner. Do not include the plastic or metal bezel around the screen, and do not measure the outside of the lid.

Convert the measurement if needed
If your ruler shows centimetres, divide the result by 2.54 to convert it to inches. Laptop screens are usually described in inches, so a result close to 39.6 cm is commonly described as a 15.6-inch screen.
